Support for Learning

Albyn School has a team of teachers dedicated to working with children who require support with their learning.

It is the role of the English as an Additional Language/Support for Learning (EAL/SfL) department to develop strategies and provide services that enable and/or enhance the academic progress of all pupils so that, in keeping with our strategic aims and ethos, they can flourish and enjoy the richness and variety of education at Albyn School.

Overall, the role of the EAL/SfL department is one of partnership in action. Liaising with all stakeholders, both within and out with school, the EAL/SfL team co-ordinates the efforts made by the school to assist pupils with their learning needs. This will include disseminating information, giving guidance on appropriate teaching strategies, liaising with teachers, the adaptation and provision of teaching resources, giving direct support where necessary and generally acting as an advocate for pupils.

The department aims to provide effective and appropriate support from Nursery to Upper 6. This may be short-term or long-term and may involve individual or small group sessions or in-class co-operative teaching. Albyn School amalgamated with The Total French School in 2018 and, consequently, we have increased the EAL support we provide.

The department also co-ordinates the provision of assessment arrangements for external examinations. All exam boards have rigorous procedures to ensure fairness and equity in the provision of assessment arrangements. The EAL/SfL department ensures that there is appropriate evidence to support any application for assessment arrangements, including the administration of standard tests where standardised scores are required.
