Boarding House Update!

Traditionally a boarding school until the mid-nineties, Albyn School reverted back to its roots in August 2016 and reintroduced boarding. Since then it has grown from strength to strength with new and exciting changes coming in the near future.

This year the boarding house has grown with the addition of two new houseparents! Albyn School is proud to introduce two new members of staff to the boarding house – Jules Gunning and Joanna Thomas.

Find out more about our new houseparents below!

Jules Gunning – Head of Boarding

Tell us your name, your new title and where you are originally from!
My name is Jules Gunning and my new title is Head of Boarding at Albyn School. I was originally born in Manchester but have since lived between Scotland and Yorkshire.

Where have you worked previously and what were your roles?
I have always worked in traditional all girls schools and I have previously worked at Tudor Hall and Queen Margaret’s school in York. During my time at Queen Margaret’s I was head of boarding as well as running events and marketing at the school.

Why did you decide to work in boarding? And when?
I was originally working as an exams manager and my son had left home to go to university. I am a people person and have always loved to be around others, so I decided to go work in a boarding house and gradually moved up the ranks there and absolutely loved it!

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I guess it is watching the children develop. I have looked after hundreds of children over the years and it is brilliant to see how successful they become in an environment you have created. I love being there for the children, creating a bond, having a relationship with them and seeing them thrive.

What do you look forward to most about working at Albyn school?
Meeting everyone. I look forward to the challenge of boarding and what it holds in store for me. I look forward to creating fun for the children and developing the boarding house.  I am very used to looking after 80 children so it will be a challenge to run a smaller house.

Tell us about your dog
!
My dogs name is Hetty and she is a 3 year old Springer Spaniel. She has lived with me in boarding since she was 8 weeks old and loves all the attention she gets from the children. She is scared of cats and loves being in the water!

Joanna Thomas – Assistant Houseparent

Tell us your name, your new title and where you are originally from!
My name is Joanna Thomas, I am originally from Anglesey, North Wales and my new title is Assistant Houseparent and PE & Games Teacher.

Where have you worked previously and what were your roles?
I previously worked at St Edmund’s college in Hertfordshire where I was a Graduate assistant in the PE department and was also one of the boarding assistants. I’ve also works at Millfield school as an Academy leader for Basketball and assistant houseparent. My first residential role was in America, where I was a waterfront specialist during the day and ‘camp counsellor’ in the evenings and I loved it!

Why did you decide to work in boarding and when? What do you enjoy most about your role?
I have always had an interest in working in a residential setting after my first camp experience in 2015 as it was a lot of fun! After completing my graduate role at St Edmunds, it definitely confirmed boarding was something I wanted to pursue as you get to see the pupils in many different settings, rather than just in class. For some pupils PE isn’t their favourite so boarding allows me to nurture different talents that they have and help in different areas- this is also what I enjoy most about the role!

What do you look forward to most about working at Albyn school?
I am thoroughly looking forward to carrying on developing my knowledge in both boarding and PE. Especially the boarding as it is the perfect environment to continue to learn how to provide the best care for the pupils. It’s a small boarding house so we get to know the pupils extremely well and can provide excellent support. In PE I am looking forward to developing the basketball team as we have entered into a league for the first time this year!

What are your hobbies?
I love everything to do with sport. I have joined both Basketball and Netball clubs in Aberdeen after playing both sports both locally and internationally in previous years.
