Modern Studies

It is important that our pupils have an understanding of the political system in contemporary Scotland, the rest of the UK and worldwide. By examining a selection of national and international issues through social, political and economic analysis, our pupils are given an insight into the world of politics.

Pupils use different media, including ICT, newspapers and role play to add depth to their understanding. Trips are organised to different locations appropriate to the topics studied in class. For example, our senior pupils visit a prison where they tour the institution and interview staff and prisoners to get an insight into their different perspectives. We also give pupils the opportunity to interview an MSP in order to enhance their learning and research.

Topics covered in our Modern Studies course include:

  • Social Issues in the U.K
  • The Developing World
  • International Issues
  • The USA
  • Crime and Law in the UK

The development of social science research skills is an essential component of Modern Studies and pupils have the opportunity to apply these in areas of investigation, including of their own choice based on the particular areas of interest they have.

The department is very successful in terms of raising attainment, leading to excellent exam results. This has allowed pupils to study at many universities including Cambridge and Edinburgh. Additionally, several of pupils have won national prizes including the SQA Advanced Higher Modern Studies Award, the Bill Clinton and University of Wessex Essay Writing Competition and Show Racism the Red Card competition.
