Modern Languages

Throughout the various stages of learning, the emphasis is on speaking and language which will be of use in practical situations.

In the Lower School, the French lessons are closely linked to the project work of the class. All activities follow the 5 –14 Guidelines in Modern Languages and clear progression is evident in all skills.

Courses

Pupils are prepared for Standard Grade, Higher and Advanced Higher level. Spanish is offered at Intermediate level 1.

In addition to conventional textbooks, we also use TV programmes, songs, computer games, the internet and magazines to reinforce the work of the class. Pupils often enjoy role-playing and acting out scenes. We are also fortunate to have the services of French and German Assistants who conduct weekly conversation classes with the pupils.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Pupils are regularly given the opportunity to take part in activities which reflect the customs or culture of the foreign countries such as sampling a French or German breakfast. There are often quizzes and games to enable pupils to discover more about the history and traditions of the country whose language they are studying.

Pupils are often taken to a local cinema where they are able to watch films in the original language. Wherever possible, pupils are encouraged to take part in national competitions. This year a group of UI pupils won second prize in a German poster competition. The department has also won prizes for performing plays and essay writing in a foreign language.

Trips abroad are a wonderful way for pupils to practise the language they have been studying in a real situation. In the last few years there have been trips to Paris and the Opal Coast in France, The Rheinland and the Black Forest in Germany as well as Barcelona in Spain. These trips are great fun and pupils benefit greatly from the experience.
