Classics

Courses available: Latin – from Upper 1 to Advanced Higher. Classical Studies at Higher and Advanced Higher Levels

The Classics Department at Albyn is a thriving, busy place, based in Room B13.

The classroom is well equipped with a computer and digital projector. The walls of the classroom are decorated with a bright and lively display of pupils’ work.

Pupils entering Upper 1 choose between Latin and German. In Upper 1 and 2 we follow 5-14 Guidelines, developing the skills required for Standard Grade in Upper 3 and 4.

At all levels pupils are encouraged to imagine what it must have been like to live in the Ancient World. For example, pupils in Upper 1 research Clothing and Fashion and are then asked how they would have liked to have to wear long, woollen dresses every day.

The teaching of Latin has changed in recent years. Pupils still have to learn vocabulary and grammar but the emphasis is on using them to understand the stories, so that they can enjoy the wealth of classical literature – from Cicero’s case against a corrupt politician to the Romans’ fascination with tales of the supernatural.

Whilst they are finding out about the Romans’ own feelings about Gladiatorial Games or how a young Roman felt when his girlfriend left him, they are also developing important life skills such as how to research information and present it in the most effective manner, or how to analyse a situation and decide how to deal with it.

Classics may be the study of the language and literature of two ancient civilizations but it still has a great deal to offer students.

The study of Classics enriches their understanding of their own civilisation while helping them to develop the skills required to cope with life in the 21st Century.
