Sports

Sport is an important part of both curricular and extra-curricular life at Albyn School and for pupils of all standards and abilities.

The Upper 1 – Upper 3 PE curriculum serves to develop pupils’ overall fitness as well as their skills in gymnastics, tennis, athletics and swimming. During games lessons boys will be coached in football and rowing while the girls will be coached in netball and hockey. For those with both the interest and aptitude in competitive sport, the focus will be to combine continual player development and improved team performance. Only the strongest team will be selected for inter-school competitions. Albyn currently fields competitive teams for the boys in football, rowing, athletics, cross country and golf. Girls compete in hockey, netball, cross-country, athletics, golf, tennis and in the near future, rowing.

We have a comprehensive fixture list throughout the year including national competitions and regattas, where the School has been performing with ever greater success. During the senior games afternoon, Upper 4 – Upper 6 pupils participate in a wide range of activities. These are designed to meet the needs of the competitive and recreational sports players. Currently, activities include netball, hockey, fitness training, squash, swimming and helping with riding for the disabled. In addition to engaging all pupils and providing pathways for a healthy lifestyle, the study of Physical Education is also offered at Albyn School up to and including Higher Level. Pupils studying Higher PE will be able to further develop skills in competitive activities which are creative, co-operative and individual. There will also be an aspect of theoretical analysis and development of their performance in four different areas namely; performance appreciation, preparation of the body, skills and techniques, structure, strategies and composition. This analysis seeks to ensure pupils observe and reflect upon their performances and apply key skills and concepts in their physical education development.

Higher Physical Education also allows a lot of physical exercise and pupils are required to select two negotiated activities which they feel they will excel at. Albyn School offers the opportunity for pupils to travel worldwide to participate in sport. In recent years a netball and hockey team has travelled to Barbados; there has been a football tour to Manchester and a football, hockey and netball tour to Marbella.
