Aims of the Nursery
At Albyn School Nurseries, we aim to build on and develop the learning process that you, as parents, have already begun with your children. Until now you and your family have been your child’s main educators. Coming to Nursery and working in partnership with us is the next stage in this journey. The aim of our Nursery is to provide a safe, happy and stimulating environment where each child can build a positive self-image and develop into a confident, eager and enthusiastic learner. In our Nursery we aim to acknowledge and value equally each child’s individual stage, culture, religion, language, racial background and family group. We promote equal opportunities for girls and boys. Our children learn by taking part in active play, doing, thinking, exploring through quality interaction, intervention and relationships founded in children’s interests and abilities across a variety of contexts.
Our Curriculum
The children’s needs are at the very centre of our daily and termly planning. In Nursery we follow a broadly theme related curriculum which is based on the Scottish Office Guidelines, “A Curriculum Framework for Children 3 to 5″. It encompasses:

Development in these years occurs naturally through play. “Play is a child’s work”. It is through play that children learn to come to terms with the world around them. At our Nursery we aim to provide a programme of structured and free play activities which will help each individual child to reach his/her full potential.
The Nursery Curriculum is very wide and varied with the emphasis very much on the individual child’s rate of development. There is not one activity area more important than another. Please do not worry if your child comes home with nothing in their ‘busy bag’, it is just as important that they spend time socialising and playing in the house corner or at the sand tray as it is to do a drawing or painting. The children need time to develop their own interests and motivation. An empty busy bag does not mean that no learning or worthwhile experience has taken place.
Induction
The induction procedure gives support to the social and emotional needs of the children. It helps children to cope with changes, i.e the people they will meet and the Nursery environment. It offers the opportunity to meet and welcome parents and inform them of Nursery procedures. An information meeting for parents is held in June.
The children who are moving from the Toddler Unit to Ante-Pre-School do so on the start of term following their 3rd birthday. The nursery staff will visit the Toddler Room to meet and reassure the children in the weeks leading up to this transition and the children will also have opportunities to visit the Ante Pre-School to see their new rooms and meet all the staff. Parents are also more than welcome to arrange a time to come and visit.
