Global Citizenship

Monday, November 16th, 2009 at 11:41 am

Global Citizenship is a key theme in the Curriculum for Excellence Programme. Some of the appropriate strategies recommended in Learning Teaching Scotland for rolling out this programme were used this week by staff in Albyn School. Using the expertise of staff in different areas and where possible expertise out with the school. Closer examination of the way in which community involvement and local investigations can enhance not only young people’s skills and develop their values and creativity, but also reinforce and develop their knowledge and understanding of social and political processes.

On Thursday 12 November 2009, Upper VI pupils from Albyn School visited two places of local and global community interest in Aberdeen City Centre: The Credo Cafe, run by the Way Trust and The Fair Trade Centre in George Street. This trip was a joint venture of the Guidance and PSE Department and the head of Business Management also attended. The role of the Cafe is to provide 13 week placements for pupils before they move on to full time employment and The Fair Trade Centre reinforced the idea of Aberdeen being a Fair Trade City. The pupils also had a chance to browse through the Tradecraft Catalogue and the shop commenting:”It really opened our eyes to the amount of good fair trade does. We’ll be back for our tea and coffee for the Den!”

Mrs Stirton, Head of the Business Management department at Albyn said: “What an interesting and worthwhile visit! The information on Fair Trade was very enlightening. It is the only truly Fair Trade shop in Aberdeen and perhaps only one of 2 in Scotland. I shall definitely go back and purchase some of their unique products as well as pass on information about this store to others. The information delivered by Mr Cordiner at Credo Café was so interesting but quite thought provoking to think that there are many young and not so young people living in Aberdeen who have not had the opportunities of education and work that so often we take for granted. The story of Kerry who as a third generation member of her family to have never worked have her life turned around by such a short period of 13 weeks is amazing. This Social Enterprise is providing such a great service for our people in Aberdeen and should have more publicity.”
