Helen Forbes, an Upper 6 pupil at Albyn School recently took part in the Sainsbury’s 2012 School Games last week with the Scotland squad and won a bronze medal for Scotland and Albyn School.

PGL Dalguise Refunds

PGL Dalguise Activities Week 2011 refunds should be collected from Mrs Prentice outside the library on Wednesday 16 May (not Monday 14 May) between 10.25am and 10.45am. Anyone not collecting their refund on Wednesday must collect it from the Assistant Bursars’ Office by 4pm on Tuesday 22 May.

Evening Express Team Chess Tournament Results

Albyn School pupils were very successful at the Evening Express Team Chess Tournament on Saturday.

The teams were as follows:
Team A (Revenge) – Duncan Depasquale, Ngoni Masiyakurima, Tariq Pasha and Alexandra Eagles – won the event for the 3rd year running.

Team B- ‘Dark of the Albyn’-Mark Douglas, Seumas Hughes, Chelsea Wong and Mhairi Brooker – were awarded 3rd place

Team C – ‘Albyn Wreckers’- Ross Greig, Jeremy Wong, Daniel Smith and Samuel McKenzie – were awarded joint 4th place.

Albyn Pupil Wins a Place at The Sound and Music Summer School

Katy Haugh, an Upper 6 pupil at Albyn School has won a place on The Sound and Music Summer School.

The School now in its fourth year is a collaboration between Sound and Music, the UK’s development agency for new music and sound and the Purcell School of Music, a specialist music school that has fantastic expertise and facilities for music-making. Between them, they have many years of providing residential tuition and support for young composers.

During the summer school, up to 75 young composers will spend the week learning about all aspects of creating music, working with professional composers and musicians and using the specialist facilities of the Purcell School. Katy will have the opportunity to work on her own style of composition, exploring different ways of making music, and will receive a CD of the piece of music she created.

The Albyn Chess Championships organised by the North East Junior Chess Association and sponsored by Albyn School, was held on Sunday 29th April. The following pupils won awards:-

Intermediate Girls Shield (for players with a grade over 300 and below 750)
1st Place – Chelsea Wong
2nd Place – Alexandra Eagles

Intermediate Boys Shield
3rd Place – Duncan Depasquale

Junior Boys Shield (for players ungraded or with a grade below 300)
1st Place – Jeremy Wong (winning all 6 games)
3rd Place – Tariq Pasha

Medals were also awarded in the Junior Shields to
Cecilia Miotto – best P5
Mhairi Brooker – best P7

Mark Douglas – best P7
Sam McKenzie – best P5
Nathan Roulson – best P4

Douglas Charity Event

Books Abroad
I am delighted to bring you news of the very successful Douglas Charity event which took place recently. As the charity Books Abroad was chosen by our charities reps, it was decided that a school book sale would be the most suitable way to raise awareness of the cause. Pupils from Lower 1 all the way through to Upper 6 and even some staff donated books of all kinds to ensure that there was something to interest everybody. With some pupils opting to exchange their books for new ones and some making a cash donation to the charity, there were lots of people who left with happy faces and some new bedtime reading.

The beauty of our event was that thanks to all of the kind donations we were left with 8 large boxes of books which are being passed on to books abroad for shipment to underprivileged communities. Their next pallet is destined for Zanzibar in Africa! To assist with the cost of these shipments we also decided that a bake sale would be a good way to raise some funds. Coupled with the money which was raised by the sale of books, we achieved the total of £320 which will be greatly received from a very worthy cause.

Headmaster’s Colours

Sophie Glenn and Ailsa Davidson, two of the Upper 6 pupils at Albyn School will be receiving Headmaster’s colours this Friday for their achievements in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. For the last 2 years, Sophie has volunteered with the ‘meet and greet’ Red Cross team at ARI and has recently completed a Young Leaders’ course with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Ailsa, who joined Albyn last year was quick to sign up as a Direct Entrant Gold candidate. Ailsa chose cake decorating and a Nick Nairn cookery course for her skill section and for 18 months she has been volunteering at a Red Cross Charity shop in Stonehaven.

Future Prospects are Grampian Young Enterprise Winners!

The Upper 5 Young Enterprise Company Future Prospects lifted the trophy at the Grampian Young Enterprise Final at the Marcliffe Hotel last night. The nine female entrepreneurs won Best Trade Stand and were named Grampian Young Enterprise Company for 2012. The team- Alicia Davis MD, Freya Lawrence, Kate Falconer, Becky Adam, Philippa Davis Hannah Campbell, Robyn Mackie- Smart, Maddy Newman and Mairi Kennedy are delighted with their success. The girls were delighted that so many of their parents and family attended the event.

Future Prospects are promoting a reusable sandwich wrapper which is perfect for “food on the go”. The wrapper also doubles as a mat to protect clothing when having a packed lunch or picnic. This innovative product is only available from Future Prospects YE and now due to recent negotiations Satrosphere Science shop. The wrapper retails for £4.99 and can be purchased through School.

Future Prospects are now preparing for the Scottish Young Enterprise Final in Glasgow in June.

Dain tea, another Upper 5 Young Enterprise Company, also competed in the Final last night. They delivered a very strong presentation and had amazing sales during the Finals event. The company members -Rebecca Henderson MD, Zoe Chick, Chelsie Feather, Hannah Clark, Ellie Aldersey Williams, Tamsin Raitt, Selina Pope and Katy Malone.
