Upper 5
Overview of the Upper 5 Curriculum
- Pupils usually study five subjects in Upper 5.
- Pupils may choose five Highers or a mixture of Higher and Intermediate 2 courses but their overall programme must include at least three Highers.
- Entry to Higher courses is for pupils who have achieved either a Credit level pass at Standard Grade, or a pass at Intermediate 2 or equivalent. Some subjects have specific entry requirements. These can be found at the end of the subject entries.
- Upper 5 pupils are also obliged to follow a programme of Games, PSE and RMPS.
- Any variant of the above is at the discretion of the Headmaster who will take into account special circumstances such as pupils who arrive with qualifications attained elsewhere or pupils who have experienced illness at the time of their examinations.
- It is important to note that the availability of courses overleaf is dependent upon a sufficient uptake for each course. Any pupil who selects a course that is not viable will be informed and allowed to reselect from the subjects available.
- Changes of subject will only be possible within the timetabled columns once these have been set. Changes will only be possible until the September holiday weekend.
- Estimate examinations will be set by the school in February 2013, followed by the SQA examinations in May and June 2013.
Some Points of Explanation
Highers have long been the ‘gold standard’ of the Scottish educational system, and still form the qualifications on which offers from Scottish universities are based. Advanced Highers, taken in Upper 6, are at least the equivalent of A Levels, and universities in the rest of theUK will often make conditional offers based on Advanced Highers and Highers.
Sometimes we ask pupils to take Highers over two years rather than one. This will not happen without full discussion with the pupil and his/her parents.
Intermediate 2 qualifications are equivalent to a Credit level pass at Standard Grade.

Examination Board
With the exception of the European Computer Driving Licence all courses currently offered at Albyn are under the auspices of the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority).
