Albyn School has a long and proud tradition stretching back into the last half of the nineteenth century and continuing into the twenty first. Since its foundation in 1867 the School has changed both its name and its location within the West End of Aberdeen. For a time it was known as the Union Place Ladies School while in 1886, the School relocated 4-6 Albyn Place and acquired a new name. In 1925 the School moved again onto its Queen’s Road site. For most of its history, Albyn was both a day and boarding school and it is only comparatively recently that it has become an exclusively day school. Change has been a cornerstone of Albyn’s existence and has continued up to the present day. In 2005, Albyn admitted boys into its Lower School and we will be fully co-educational by 2013. In a Darwinian sense, Albyn has evolved and adapted ever more successfully to new challenges and new circumstances.
As the School has changed and grown it has become ever more successful. Small classes, well motivated pupils and dedicated teachers have all contributed to excellent examination results and these have helped pupils into their universities of first choice. But examination success is not the be all and end all for at Albyn for the journey is as important as the destination. The opportunities for musicians to perform, for our sportsmen and women to compete, for our older pupils to walk the hills of Scotland as part of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, all serve to help pupils enjoy their education in its richness and variety. As a School we maintain a strong sense of community and are proud of what our pupils achieve.
In looking both at the successes of the past and promise of the future, Albyn School is soon to embark on another period of challenge and change. This brochure outlines the School’s plans to renovate its library, re-model some of its Victorian buildings, bring together the nurseries onto one site, add new state of the art laboratories and build a new classroom block to help increase the range of subjects that can be taught.
These plans will equip the School for generations of pupils. The challenge of this enterprise will be significant but we will succeed in this venture with the support of Governors, staff, parents, pupils and the local community.
The following companies are actively supporting the Albyn Foundation and we thank them for their involvement.
