Science flourishes at Albyn, with one of the largest take up rates of all optional subjects. Pupils currently study biology, chemistry and physics in four purpose-built laboratories that were opened in 1993, extended in 2002 and improved further in 2008. These have allowed for teaching of separate sciences to all pupils from the time they enter the Upper School. The staff are a well-qualified and experienced group of teachers committed to taking a modern approach to teaching the subject, and making as wide a use of ICT facilities as possible.
The growth in numbers wishing to study the sciences from Standard Grade up to Advanced Higher Level has led us to build further dedicated laboratories to allow the subject to flourish and to meet the demand of increasing numbers seeking to careers in science, engineering and medicine.
Skillfully designed to utilize underused land lying between the existing science block and the traditional buildings fronting onto Queen’s Lane three additional science laboratories will be created around an environmental courtyard. The palette of materials and detail will be similar to those used in the new classroom block. Glazed curtain walling screens will be defined by feature stone banding, continued around the perimeter to form a parapet to the sarnafil roof.
Bright spacious and equipped to the highest standards, this extensive suite of laboratories will provide the very best opportunities for pupils to develop their understanding of science and technology.
Science may set limits to knowledge, but should not set limits to imagination.
