The new term is about to commence and the first phase of the building project is now complete. There are now 3 new science labs ready for the start of term. The new links are nearing completion and the new toddler nursery will be finished in a few weeks time. One of the more visible aspects of the project over the summer has been the demolishing of the existing front entrance. In the next few weeks scaffolding will be erected and construction will begin on a new front entrance. In the playground a steel structure has begun to take shape and will eventually become the new classroom block.

This week work momentarily ceased on the building site with the Foundation Stone laying ceremony on Thursday 12 May 2011. Professor Celso Grebogi was the guest of honour with the school Governors, science staff, the senior management team and representatives from Robertson Eastern (our main building contractor), Archial (architect), McLeod and Aitken (quantity surveyors) and our project manager Mr Gordon Milne all in attendance.

After a successful ceremony work continued on casting the floors in the science labs and garage. Work has also just begun on clearing the area behind the former janitor’s house in preparation for the new Harriet House nursery adjacent to the Oliver Wing. An additional fire exit has been created in the ante-pre school to provide an emergency means of escape into the Oliver Wing garden once the rear entrance of the Oliver Wing is closed off.

The Albyn School Redevelopment Project finally began this week with the contractors, Robertson, taking possession of the site behind Harriet House. A high fence has now been put up to segregate the builders’ compound from the rest of the School and behind this the builders have been getting to work. The tree in the garden of Harriet House has been removed but will be replaced with two new trees at the end of the project. A cross section of the tree trunk has been kept for educational purposes by the nurseries. Work has also begun on the disused garages which will become the new science labs.
