Albyn Pupils Take To The Stage In The Kist

Albyn pupils, led by Miss Laura Pike, are currently performing in ‘The Kist’, a new show of stunning songs, stories and dynamic dance, that is running at His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen from Thursday, August 25 to Saturday, August 27. This show is entertainment at its best, a nation’s music experience gathered from around the world and distilled back home here in Scotland, taking viewers on an uplifting journey, from ancient to modern music through song, story and dance.

Wherever the Scots travelled they took their kists. These sturdy wooden chests held all their wordly possessions, their clothes, tools, books and memories of home and childhood.

Fiona Kennedy leads a cast of outstanding young singers – Claire Hastings, Darren Maclean, James Muldoon, Rachel Oates and Ruairidh McDonald.

Special guest Marcus Hummon, Nashville-based Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter, first-class musicians and supported by Albyn School Choir and Evolution School of Dance, make this a production to remember.

U6 Pupil Awarded a Nuffield Bursary

Lucy Norton, a current Upper 6 pupil, was awarded a Nuffield Bursary to work at the Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen over the summer holidays. There are only a handful of Bursaries available each year, which meant this was a highly competitive competition. Lucy worked in the lab of Dr Philip Cash on “Bacterial Pathogens of the Urinary Tract”. She thoroughly enjoyed it and it has helped her to decide that she would now like to pursue a career in Biological Sciences.

UKMT Summer School

During the summer, Matthew MacFarlane, an Upper 4 pupil, was given the opportunity to spend a week with 50 students from across the UK (only 2 from Scotland) at a United Kingdom Mathematics Trust summer school at Birmingham University. Places were offered to the top students in UKMT competitions during the year.

The week offered a range of mathematical activities in group scenarios and brought a guest speaker each day. This was a great opportunity for Matthew to stretch his knowledge and use of Maths and to meet and work with others in this national forum. UKMT run a mentoring scheme which Matthew intends to use as he continues with his mathematical studies.
