Foundation Stone Laid to Mark the Start of Redevelopment Project at Albyn School

On Thursday 12 May 2011 at 4.30pm a foundation stone was laid at Albyn School to signal the beginning of its £5 million redevelopment project – and one of the most significant periods of development in the school’s 143 year history.

The guest of honour at the ceremony was Professor Celso Grebogi. He is a parent of a current pupil and a world-renowned academic who holds the Sixth Century Chair in Nonlinear and Complex Systems at Aberdeen University. Professor Grebogi will lay the foundation stone for new state-of-the-art science laboratories – the first phase of the redevelopment project.

Miss Gemma Neal, Marketing Director at Albyn School, said; “This is an exciting time for us all. The School is at the outset of a major new phase in its development, one that is likely to secure Albyn’s future for another generation of pupils. We’re delighted to welcome Professor Grebogi to kick-start the project. His presence continues a long association between the School and Aberdeen University. Two former vice chancellors have opened science laboratories at the School.”

The redevelopment project – expected to take nearly 18 months – is led by Robertson, the infrastructure, support services and construction group and managed by MacLeod and Aitken. In addition to the creation of laboratories for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with Technology, the project will enable the School to renovate its library, re-model some of its Victorian buildings, construct a new nursery which will allow the nursery classes to be housed on one site, and build a new classroom block to enable the school to offer a wider range of subjects to its pupils.

This ceremony is an important milestone in the history of Albyn School, one of Scotland’s top performing independent schools. The School fought back from possible closure some years ago by becoming co-educational in 2005 and has been growing steadily in recent years.
